The Tibetan Kyi Apso is an ancient and very primitive herding and protecting dog breed that originated in Tibet. It is considered to be the oldest breed of dog of Tibetan area. Its origin dates back to 17th century. In tibetan, 'Kyi' means 'dog' and 'apso' translates into 'beared' so Kyi Apso is translated as Bearded Dog. This is a very rare breed outside its native country. These dogs are very loveable, charming and highly intelligent. Some even consider these dogs as 'Psychic'. Indigenous to the Mt.Kailish region of the Tibetan Plateau, this rare dog has evolved over the countless centuries into a superbly resilient and resourceful animal. Used primarily for guarding livestock and property, the Tibetan Kyi Apso is also a very fast and effective hunter. This breed stands between 24-27 inches and weighs below 100 lbs.
Because of the unusual facial hair, the KyiApso's head appears to be larger than it really is. The skull is flat and strong muzzle that appears fuller due to beard. Almond shaped eyes are deep amber or brown coloured. The ears are fairly long and carried low on the sides. Nose is always black. The well balanced and elongated body comes with a level topline, compact chest and tight loin. The tail is set high. When relaxed, it reaches below the hocks. It is carried in a forward plume of more than a full curl over one hip. This breed comes with a long, full and firm, weather resistant topcoat and soft and dense undercoat. This breed can come in any colour although black with tan, gold, white or silver are more preferred colours.
