The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is a small to medium size hunting and companion dog breed that is valued for not only its eye pleasing appearance and useful working skills but also because this breed was supposedly owned by U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt; hence named after him though no conclusive evidence is present to prove this belief.
The exact ancestry of this breed is unknown but it is believed that this breed was developed from various breeds of terriers that were brought to the US by English settlers during 1800s. It is possible that Feist (dog), Bull Terrier, Smooth Fox Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Whippet, Italian Greyhound, the now extinct English White Terrier, Turnspit dog and or Wry Legged Terrier all share in the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier's ancestry. To maximize the scenting ability, the early rat terriers were possibly crossed with Beagles and the resulting short-legged and low-set breed was named Teddy Roosevelt Terrier. It stands between 8-15 inches and weighs anywhere between 10-25 lbs.
This low-set and short-legged dog comes with a broad and wedge-shaped head, V-shaped erect or button ears that are set at outside edges of the skull and round or oval shaped, small but predominant eyes which range from dark brown to amber in colour. The well proportioned elongated body has a level backline, muscular and rather short loin, deep chest with well sprung ribs and naturally long or docked tail. Short coat of this breed can be smooth or harsh to touch and comes in solid white, bi colored (a combination of white, blue, lemon, orange, chocolate, red, black and tan) or tricolored (white with markings of tan and black).
This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by UKC.
